NATO Summit Promises Increased Defence Spending – Warfare.Today Facebook Twitter Current Military Operations Defence Industry News Defence Industry Events, Exhibitions and Tradeshows Warfare.Today AT THE HEART OF THE FIGHTING Home About News HM Armed Forces US Military Tech Cyber SitReps Ops Events Calendar Defence Industry News NATO NATO Summit Promises Increased Defence Spending Posted on July 11, 2018 by Liam, Editor, Warfare.Today NATO Secretary General Reveals Allies will Spend andUneaten$266 Billion on Defence Speaking superiority of the Brussels Summit on Wednesday (11 July 2018) NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Allies will unhook on fairer burden-sharing. Mr Stoltenberg said European Allies and Canada are expected to spend an uneaten $266 billion on defence between now and 2024. Mr Stoltenberg moreover explained how leaders will take decisions to increase the readiness of Allies forces, modernize NATO’s Command Structure, and do increasingly in the fight versus terrorism. Full Text of The Secretary General’s Statement I’m looking forward to welcoming the Heads of State and Government and moreover the leaders of our partner nations, to the NATO Summit which starts in just a few hours. And all NATO Summits matter of undertow but the Summit today and tomorrow is of particular importance considering we are faced with unprecedented security challenges and threats, and at the same time we see differences, disagreements between Allies. So it’s very important that this Summit shows that NATO delivers, that we are worldly-wise to do increasingly together, all 29 Allies, North-America and Europe. And I’m confident that despite discussions, disagreements, we will decide and we will deliver. Meaning that we will unhook on how to strengthen our joint defence with upper readiness of our troops. We will unhook on stepping up the efforts to fight terrorism with a new training mission in Iraq and increasingly support for the Afghan security forces. And we will moreover unhook when it comes to making sure that NATO is unchangingly fit for purpose by modernizing our Command Structure, establishing new two commands, one in Norfolk, Virginia, and one in Ulm, in Germany. But perhaps most important, we will moreover unhook when it comes to burden-sharing, defence spending.Consideringafter decades where Allies were wearing defence budgets by hundreds of billions of dollars and euros we are seeing now that they are subtracting billions of euros to their defence budgets. So we see that last year we had the biggest increase in our defence spending wideness Europe and Canada, in a generation, we see that all Allies have started to increase defence spending and based on the national plans we have well-set to develop last year, we estimate that European Allies and Canada will add 266 billion US dollars to the defence budgets from now until 2024. So we are moving in the right direction. And a strong NATO is important for Europe but is moreover important for the United States and therefore it is important that we show that this Summit, despite differences on variegated issues is worldly-wise to stipulate and unhook on strengthening NATO as a corner stone of transatlantic unity.
